Hi David. Thanks for the reply. Someone else told me that and pointed me to nzbirdsonline. I agree it does sound a bit like a Pukekohe's 'contact call' but I swear this thing is calling on the wing and is aloft for long periods and Pukekos can't fly much better than a chicken. Also I've lived here 20 years, don't see Pukekos around and never heard this before. Also the land below where the call is coming from behind my home is dry pasture, no wetland in that direction. I never hear the call during the day.
I'm not saying it's not a pukeko. I'm just saying it doesn't seem to fit with the direction the call comes from, timing of call etc.
