Hi David. Thanks for the reply. Someone else told me that and pointed me to nzbirdsonline. I agree it does sound a bit like a Pukekohe's 'contact call' but I swear this thing is calling on the wing and is aloft for long periods and Pukekos can't fly much better than a chicken. Also I've lived here 20 years, don't see Pukekos around and never heard this before. Also the land below where the call is coming from behind my home is dry pasture, no wetland in that direction. I never hear the call during the day.

I'm not saying it's not a pukeko. I'm just saying it doesn't seem to fit with the direction the call comes from, timing of call etc.

Cheers,
Shaun.

Hi Shaun

Your recording is definitely pukeko

They fly very well, but mainly at night

All my inner city Wellington pukeko records are birds heard flying over at night

Regards
Colin

Thanks Colin. I guess that means it's a pukeko then! Odd that I've never heard it before. This is clear when I'm sitting at my computer inside and very loud when I'm watering my garden outside. I wonder did they have a great year for breeding around here last year...
Cheers,
Shaun.

Sounds like you're describing a morepork call :)

I heard a similar sound, but at 2pm in Pegasus. Watdoya think it is?

Update: I think it’s a Little Owl. Both of the Kaiapoi Pa Road Little Owl sightings were on the same day, so it is possible that one of them moved to Gladstone Park (where I heard the noise) and made a territorial call. It is highly unlikely that a morepork woke up during the daytime.

Yeah Little Owls are occasionally calling during daylight at this time of year and they're common throughout the Pegasus Bay lowlands. No Moreporks here since at least the 1950s.

Hi. Does anyone have a link to the morepork ‘eow’ noise? I have just heard a single ‘eow’ followed by a short break, then several more ‘eow’ calls, then nothing. This is the 2nd night in a row and sounds to be in a pohutakawa 10 metres from the house.

Two Morepork calls recorded in Russell Forest in 2019.
