Hi All:
We will be in New Zealand in February 2018. Does anyone have recommendations for shorebird viewing that are accessible
via public transport?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Buses go near Ambury Park/Watercare ponds near the airport in SW Auckland.

There's a very limited bus service to Maketu from Tauranga/Whakatane.

The Ahuriri Estuary/Westshore complex is within walking distance of Napier CBD, as is the Wairoa River Mouth from Wairoa town centre.

Near Nelson there are a few buses that go to Motueka, and the Rabbit Island/Tic Toc Road area of the Waimea inlet is walkable from Richmond.

Buses go to Waikuku from Christchurch giving access to the Ashley Estuary, but you'll need to walk a bit (or get wet crossing the river) to get to the more interesting northern side.

There are a number of buses that go places like Southshore/MacCormacks Bay and near the Charlesworth Wetlands for the Avon/Heathcote Estuary in E Christchurch.

The Invercargill Estuary (and Tip Lagoon) is within walking distance of the Invercargill CBD.

For Black Stilt the area around Glentanner is accessible by bus.

If you haven't come across it Rome to Rio is an ok site for checking out if a journey is feasible or not. Googling 'bus' and the place you want to go to usually works too.
