Sylvia Durrant

Postby zarkov » Sun Dec 04, 2016 8:35 pm

Sylvia's renowned in Auckland as the Bird Lady of Rothesay Bay, for the years of unpaid work she puts in nursing injured birds back to a stage where they can be returned to the wild. She's looked after two that I took round to her place, and I can say without reservation that she's a true hero of the birding world. A local woman noticed that she didn't have a proper gate to her property, and has started a Give a Little page for the pensioner as a way of thanking her for her efforts. Any surplus will go to continuing her work.

I'm sure any assistance would be gratefully received.

She does have assistance, volunteers put in 2 hours daily to help the cleaning of cages and feeding baby birds. In face I will be there tomorrow from 8am to 10am.

Yes it is, closes in the new year.

I see she's got around $3280 for her gate so far.

Apparently it cost $108, so the bird work has done ok with the surplus.

Sad to hear that Sylvia is unwell and is retiring from her wonderful work as a bird rescuer.

She's been an inspiration to us all here on the North shore, and maybe has inspired others to follow in her footsteps.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has information about what to do with injured birds in the area in the future.
