Young Mallards

Postby Jim Kirker » Sat Dec 29, 2018 10:16 am

Five little ducks were walking with mum by the Tamaki river yesterday evening. I'm pretty sure they are growing their first adult feathers and still have some down on their backs. How old are they I wonder ? Another adult female was leading a tiny duckling across the flats nearby.

1 month old.

Mallard ducklings start to fly at 7 weeks old. Average hatching season: September to December, with 2-month-old ducklings flying for first time on November to February.
Post-juvenile moult start at 3 months old on average January to April, take 1 month to replace juvenile body plumage, with 1st adult plumage.
