Identification, 2 descending notes, repeated?

Im staying in Devonport, on Auckland's North Shore at the moment and in the dawn I hear two descending bell-like notes, repeated once.

"High-low, high low"

The a lot of space before the next call.

I actually just heard this call again at 9.15am, so not just a dawn thing.

I have been trying to discover what bird I am hearing. Nothing seems right. Best guess is a tui, but not like any tui I've heard before.

So, I have been heard the bird again tonight at dusk.

Very much NOT a tui and also, it was repeating the "high-low" combo more than twice in a row this time.

Anyway , this time I managed to record its call!

Yes, a mystery indeed! It could be a vagrant Bellbird since Devonport is not far from Whangaparaoa/Shakespear Regional Park, or it could have come from Rangitoto Island. It might be a lone male that has somehow travelled south. Other than that, my bets are on a Tui.

Colin Miskelly, If you listen to the 2 recordings next to each other, aside for being low-high, they have completely different tones. I dont think they are the same.

Sorry, I had not noticed the embedded sound file further down the thread, which sounds like tui (and definitely not rosella!)

I agree this sounds like tui - they make a huge variety of noises, including some very strident and simple 1-2 note calls. Seems especially to be an issue for tui living in urban environments. Have a look at the discussion at viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6120, and in particular to one of Bozz's links to a monotonous two-note tui call - https://www.dropbox.com/s/5sdw26jzmq1y4 ... s.m4a?dl=0 - not exactly the same as yours, but there are similarities.

The other thing about tui is that they start calling ridiculously early, when it is still dark. Who knows why...
