Have just looked at Bird of the Year and noticed the Grey Fantail picture.

I recently visited a garden centre and investigated what its avian ornaments were like while I was there. Sure enough, the centre had ornaments that depicted common kingfishers. To be fair, though, the centre also had at least one ornament that was clearly based on the sacred kingfisher. Sorry about the incorrect orientation of the photos.
The centre also had great blue heron ornaments.
Other highlights included a rather short-necked 'heron' that looked like a grey weka, a 'kingfisher' that had a decurved bill and looked like a fat hummingbird, saddlebacks without wattles, and what looked to be a kiwi-weka hybrid.

Here's an interesting choice of gull for a Christchurch newspaper advertisement:

I think that I've found the latest addition to our 'The Wrong Kingfisher' series.
This magnet is being sold at Zealandia. It is part of a series of magnets that includes three other birds; the NZ Pigeon, (North Island?) Saddleback, and Red-crowned Parakeet; all of which look normal.
For some reason, it is the only bird magnet in the series that gives the bird's English name instead of its Maori name.
For those who don't know, the kingfisher in the magnet is probably based on a photo of the Little Kingfisher (Ceyx pusillus).

Another wrong kingfisher today; this time at Bunnings Warehouse.
The statues were obviously cheaply-made and a few of them were broken.

I would argue that is a stylized Belted Kingfisher (the common North American species) based on the plumage pattern and ragged crest. Little would seem even more obscure than a sacred!
Fun stuff,

I found this photo of a "fairy tern" in Catalina Bay on the ferry wharf, I think they may have the wrong tern there... Lesser Crested?

A series of balancing metal ornaments that I saw at Mitre 10 today featured a generic brown kiwi, a monarch butterfly, a generic small brown owl with horns, and Alcedo atthis.

A relatively new mural of the usual suspect WRONG kingfisher back of Naenae, Wellington, noted on my way to start a walk.
Here's a better photo in the article https://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/n ... tare-mural
