I came across this one today - oh, shocker! On the Pelorus Eco Adventures website. Pretty much every single ID feature of Grey Duck is missing from the bird in this pic!

Hi there
Andrew Crossland & others, I hope that you are contacting many of these artists & companies to advise them of their errors ? Advising them of their errors would be a good thing to do, so they can gain knowledge to ensure that the same mistakes do not continue.
I contacted the company Tahi about their error with the Eurasian Kingfisher & got a very quick & positive response. They have changed one of their labels as attached & now have a Kingfisher that has the colors & bill profile of a Kotare. I have commended them for their very quick action & attention.
Cheers

It appears that the Bellbird Arms pub has actually been shut down, and that the sign has been removed.

There is at least one other place in Manurewa that includes "Bellbird" in its title; Bellbird Takeaways. Its sign features a slightly weird-looking but still recognisable korimako.

Hi team, just a reply to those who suggest these various users of the wrong bird image should be contacted and told of their error - well yeah, its a free country so you're more than welcome too do that if you feel the need, but the reason I started this thread was to share bemusement, not to shame or chastise people or organisations (well, other than people like Forest & Bird who should be more careful if they're running a "NZ bird of the year event"). Its all very much a "first world problem" though isn't it? Some of the art work is actually pretty good - even if they haven't much of a clue as to what the bird they're trying to paint actually looks like?

so, anyway, today's offerings are......................

and this Kingfisher on what I guess is a very old artwork - kinda looks like a hybrid between the NZ one and the European one, right?

Q - what do folks reckon the tern on the cover of this educational sheet is?

Spotted these NZ bird paintings for sale at the Riccarton Market in CHCH on Sunday. Quite impressed to see a Storm-Petrel painting, but there's another one of those dodgy Kotare paintings!
