Shearwater Identification

Postby Threeps » Sun Dec 04, 2022 12:27 pm

I wonder if any of the experienced seabird specialists have a suggestion for this ID of this shearwater that was recently reported by Rob Wheeler at the Birds NZ Taranaki indoor meeting? It was a beach wreck found here in north Taranaki.
The discussion based on printed photos was around whether it was a Little Shearwater or a Subantarctic Little Shearwater.

Fluttering Shearwater Steve - but measurements are useful for beachwreck ID too

Hello Steve
As Oscar mentions, you most likely have a fluttering shearwater.

In regard to measurements, as really good reference is the Beach Patrollers Guide to Stormcast Seabirds. I recommend printing this out in booklet form & taking it with you while beach patrolling.

Thanks, Oscar and Ian.
I will report back to the finder that this is most likely a Fluttering Shearwater - and ask for some measurements for the next finding!
