Hi folks, I'm hoping to pass through the Wanganui River area in Sept and am wondering if there's any recent info on where best to view Nankeen Night Herons. I know a few years ago they frequented a cafe somewhere? Is that still the case? and where and when should one go to have a good chance of seeing one?
General birdwatching discussion, help with bird identification, and all other things relating to wild birds and birding in NZ that don't fit in one of the other forums.

Hi Andrew, I last saw the night herons about three months ago, so happy to help find them for you. I am away though from Sept 12 to Sept 28, but could arrange for someone else to take you during this time. Best you plan a night in Wanganui as being nocturnal birds they are usually seen near dusk. There is a small chance of seeing them during the day at the Upokongaro Cafe, otherwise we go to Kemps Pole, further upriver, and on private land.
