That’s not a Grey Duck. That also doesn’t quite look like a falcon.

Yeah that's definitely a hybrid duck, can even see the blue speculum with white edge.

That "falcon" is almost certainly a harrier to me. Wing span is far to large of a falcon and a falcon is much more "arrow like".

The head on the bird that is reported as ‘falcon’ I think is just a Mallard. You can even see it’s head.

Got to question the hundreds of Christchurch/Canterbury Little Black Shag sightings on Ebird. 23 at Harts Creek, 8 at Christchurch botanic gardens? Have I missed a massive explosion in their numbers in the last few years or are we all getting mixed up with Great Cormorants and Juv Little Pieds? Anyway...funny what a wet, quiet day at work drives one to do  :D

People putting the wrong dates in is a bit of a bugbear. e.g. CHECKLIST S56570321 is dated 1 Jan 1800 but is actually 5th January 1994. Species first seen in New Zealand nos 299- 333, all dated 1 Jan or 1 Dec 1900, but obviously far more recent.

Little Black Shags have been seen at Harts Creek and at other places around Lake Ellesmere from time to time and might well be breeding now. I'm not sure about the Botanic Gardens. Like the Pied Cormorant the Little Black seems to be moving further and further south, presumably coz of climate change. They have been seen fishing as a flotilla in the Avon as well.

This checklist from Willowbank includes captive birds like Kea when only wild birds like Paradise Shelduck should be counted.

Cheers Angrybird,

It's worth noting that any species not occurring in NZ will automatically be flagged and mark non-public until a reviewer takes a look. You might notice it initially if you subscribe to alerts or find it in other ways, but rest assured it will be looked at by a reviewer at the earliest convenience.
