Dabchick brood at Maungarei wetland Auckland

Postby Jim Kirker » Thu Nov 28, 2019 8:51 pm

Two adults feeding three young this evening on the big pond and chasing away a mallard. They were in the western area of the pond. There were two adults and two chicks on the north pond in August last year - not sure if they reached adulthood.

Still there this evening, same place. Adults diving and one quickly stabbing its bill tip towards the bill tip of a chick as they faced each other. I did not see food passed, but they were too far way to be sure. Wondered if the adult was training the young in eye bill coordination, if not feeding it. Mallard nearby, not chased away.
