Morning Penguins

Hi everyone,

I am a New Yorker visiting the South Island for the first time in the middle of January. I am trying to route a spot to see Yellow-eyed Penguin into my trip. I am only in range briefly - I leave Stewart Island in the evening, then immediately do a long drive from Bluff to Dunedin (arriving no earlier than 9). The next morning I am heading way north and probably can’t wait for a morning tour of Penguin Place. So ny question is:

Are there any worthwhile stops for Yellow-eyed Penguin during the day east or north of Dunedin? Do they head to sea before dawn? Or could the penguins audible at night? I apologize if these are silly questions. I want to be a respectful ecotourist.
