While out birding at the Rotokare Scenic Reserve in South Taranaki earlier today. I heard what sounded like a coot calling loudly and repeatedly. Stalking up to the waters edge I couldn't see anything but above me there was this bird poking its head out of a hole in a tall tree. This would have been around 10 metres above the ground. I snapped off a few quick images before the bird disappeared back into its hole. It called for another few minutes then shut up and despite my waiting for another 30 mins it didn't make another sound or show its head again. Its call was a repeated loud and clear "chirrp". It was not harsh like any of the rosellas or lorikeet that are heard further north in Taranaki. It was about twice the size of the numerous Tieke (North Island Saddlebacks). I've looked through NZ Birds online and can't see anything that fits the patterns of colour of this bird. I suspect that this is a young bird that has not yet fledged. Could these be a native parrot or is it more likely to be one of the Ozzie introductions?
Viewed in the field the red patch on the top of the head extended back to the nape of the neck. The dark band around the chest was a muddy brown and the lighter lower band was an off white.
