NZ dotterels breeding inland

Postby David Riddell » Sat Feb 15, 2020 1:21 pm

There have been a few reports on this forum over the years of NZ dotterels breeding at unusual sites but it was still nice to see a pair with a 3/4 grown chick on a road construction site opposite the Bay Park raceway Mt Maunganui yesterday afternoon. Lots of wide open bare white sand, they looked very much at home and not at all worried about the streams of traffic crawling past.

Annette snapped a quick shot with her phone as we drove past the Bay Park dotterels, thought she'd missed it, but having another look at the image there is in fact a dotterel there! Not exactly what you'd call classic NZ dotterel habitat...

I'm pretty sure they have been seen on inland construction sites around Auckland before, like motorways being built, new subdivisions and industrial areas. The first time I ever saw one was from a plane landing at auckland airport. I was stoked.
