When do Shining Cuckoos Stop Singing?

Postby Pat Miller » Thu Jan 23, 2020 2:42 pm

Hi Folks,
We all take great interest in when we hear the first shining cuckoo of the season, but not the last. I got home from holiday on 16 January and up to then and for the next day or two was hearing shining cuckoos, but I just realised yesterday that I haven't heard any in the last 4 or 5 days, despite being in many areas where they are. So, I thought I'd start a thread to see if other people have noticed the same, and find out whether they stop around the same time each year.

I know they don't leave when they stop singing, as I've seen them in February and early March sometimes, long after they've stopped singing, but when did you last hear one?

I'm in Whangarei, and my last one would have been around 18th or 19th January.

I travelled through the Te Araroa section from Queenstown to Invercargill 25/11- 14/12 and was in Whirinaki 26/12 - 29/12 and didn't hear any.

At least one calling near the start of the Greenstone track Jan 4. I didn't hear any on the tracks Jan 5-8, but regular long tailed cuckoos.
Plenty of calls at Orton Bradley Park, Lyttelton harbour just before new year,

I normally reckon they go quiet after about the middle of January. One was singing repeatedly near Owaka last Friday (17th), but as I have not heard any around Balclutha this season, I don't know how representative that is.

eBird data helps answer the question. The last I heard in Auckland was in the Hunuas on Jan 6 and there are records from the Waitakeres three days ago.

Should also add that I've heard very few around Pukerua Bay this year - similar situation to last year.

I heard one on Tiritiri Matangi Island yesterday (Thursday 23rd).

The latest I have heard them in New Zealand is 1 February but, in Australia, I have heard them in April.

Still multiple birds singing in the Bombay hills. Just been watching two frantic grey warbler parents trying to keep up with feeding a fledged SCuckoo.
