Moeraki Pelagics to Otago Canyons / Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th July 2021

Postby Oscar Thomas » Sun Apr 18, 2021 5:07 pm

Kia ora, two full-day pelagic trips with Ezifish Charters are planned out of Moeraki, Otago to the offshore canyons for the Saturday July 3rd, and Sunday July 4th 2021.
This is a fantastic time of year for a winter foray into the cooler waters of our southerly seas. Naturally no guarantees on what we will see, but old favourites the Cape, White-chinned and Giant Petrels are likely to hang around, and there is potential for rare and sought after subantarctic species such as Grey Petrel, Broad-billed Prion, Grey-backed Storm Petrel and up to 10 species of Albatross. Marine mammals including Hector’s Dolphin, Long-finned Pilot Whales and Shepherd's Beaked Whales have also all been observed in the area.

We aim to depart Moeraki each day at approximately 8am and return by 5pm, going on their 55ft long, 5m wide fiberglass vessel "The Sirocco". You’ll need to bring your own food, drink and other supplies for the trip, and a BBQ sausage sizzle lunch will also be provided. There are still spaces available on the Sunday July 4th trip, so if you are interested in reserving a spot please email me at oscarkokako@gmail.com - to confirm you will need to make a deposit of $120 (which is only refundable to people who pull out if I can fill your spot before the trip takes place). There is also the option to be placed on the waitlist for the Saturday July 3rd trip should people drop out. The final trip cost will be sorted closer to the time and depend on the number of people on the day. If the trip is cancelled due to weather then the payment will be fully refunded. The call will be made by the skipper 48hrs ahead of the trips.
The charter company Ezifish offers onsite bunk style accommodation for the night before at a cost of $30pp (can be contacted directly to arrange via http://www.ezifish.com), alternatively Moeraki Holiday Park is suitable for individuals or small groups, or it is an hour’s drive north from Dunedin City. Email the address above if you have any questions.

The Saturday trip is currently fully booked (you can still ask to go on the waiting list), but a few places are still available on the new Sunday 4th July trip. The cost will be approximately $120 each for the full-day pelagic. Contact oscarkokako@gmail.com for more information or to secure a spot on a voyage.
