AUTUMN Tutukaka ‘Petrel Station’ Pelagic Trip Dates : APR to JUN 2022

Postby ourspot » Thu Jan 27, 2022 5:59 pm

Here's the AUTUMN 2022 Tutukaka 'Petrel Station' seabird pelagic trip schedule.

In AUTUMN as the weather and oceans cool down it's migration time for the seabirds heading up from the southern oceans so there's potential for some scarcer species passing through. Most of the local summer breeders gradually depart on their migration, and the local winter breeders return and begin to build in numbers as well. Always a great day out. Check out some of the past trip reports and images on the Petrel Station Facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/thepetrelstation

AUTUMN 2022 pelagic dates:
– 30th April (Saturday) – TRIP FULL
– 9th May (Monday) – TRIP FULL
– 22nd May (Sunday) – TRIP FULL

TRIP DETAILS
Based out of Tutukaka, in northern New Zealand, these trips are a great opportunity to spend a full day on the water and enjoy seeing a variety of pelagic seabirds (including shearwaters, petrels, prions, albatrosses, storm-petrels, skua), often really close to the boat. Naturally there’s no guarantee on what seabirds will be present but that’s part of the excitement.

The trips leave Tutukaka, go via the spectacular Poor Knight Islands and then head out to the ‘Petrel Station’ about 50km offshore. We generally depart just after sunrise and return to Tutukaka late afternoon, which usually gives us about 9 to 10 hours out on the water.

The 30ft boat has fantastic all round viewing for excellent seabird spotting and photography opportunities. The boat is fairly basic with a small separate toilet, seating in the form of a couple of benches and a few big chilly bins (so there can be a bit of standing involved). If it rains there are pull down plastic sides to shelter behind. You’ll need to provide your own food, drink and other supplies for the trip, and dress for the conditions.

COSTS:
The trip costs are shared amongst the people on board (maximum is 8 people, and 5 or 6 people is the minimum to make costs feasible or it may not go ahead). A $215 payment is required upon booking to secure your place and any balance is sorted closer to the trip date when numbers onboard are confirmed. Please note if you decide not to come after payment is made, and I can't find a replacement person to fill your spot, then unfortunately I can't refund you the initial payment.

Trip costs (based on how many are onboard) will be:
• 8 people $215 each
• 7 people $240 each
• 6 people $265 each

Please note: Due to an increase in cost to charter the boat the trip costs will be going up from July 2022. The 22nd May trip will be the last trip at these prices.

If the trip is cancelled due to adverse conditions, or not enough people, then all money paid will be refunded. There may also be the chance of Covid related cancellations.

SPECIAL CHARTER TRIPS
I'm also happy to organise special private charter pelagic trips to the Petrel Station for individuals or groups, from NZ or internationally. Please enquire about any dates you are interested in and I can let you know boat availability and charter costs.

Let me know if you’re keen for a great day out, or if you have any questions about the trips.

Re: AUTUMN Tutukaka ‘Petrel Station’ Pelagics : MAR to MAY 2022

Postby ourspot » Tue Mar 22, 2022 2:01 pm

Hi all

I've still got some places available on a couple of upcoming autumn seabird pelagics to the 'Petrel Station'. The autumn months of April and May are prime migration time for seabirds heading up from the southern oceans so there's potential for some scarcer species passing through.
– 30th April (Saturday) – only 1 place left
– 22nd May (Sunday) – 5 places left

Let me know if you’re keen for a great day out, or if you have any questions about the trips.

Cheers
