SUMMER 2023 Tutukaka ‘Petrel Station’ Pelagic Seabird Trip Dates

Postby ourspot » Wed Sep 07, 2022 8:52 pm

Here's the SUMMER 2023 Tutukaka 'Petrel Station' seabird pelagic trip schedule.

In summer all the local seabirds are in the area in good numbers, the Gray Noddy's are back, and the NZ Storm Petrels always put on a great show. And as the oceans warm up as summer progresses there's the possibility of semi-tropical birds making an appearance too, so there's no telling what could turn up. It's always a great day out.

SUMMER 2023 pelagic dates:
– 7th February 2023 (Tuesday) – TRIP FULL
– 17th February 2023 (Friday) – only 1 place left
– 5th March 2023 (Sunday) – TRIP FULL
– 6th March 2023 (Monday) – only 2 places left
– 18th March 2023 (Saturday) – only 1 place left

As well as the chance to see some amazing seabirds, these non-profit trips have a goal to gather as much at-sea data on the distribution and variety of seabird species present off our coast throughout the year - with 65 species of seabirds recorded to date!

You can check out some of the past trip reports and images on the Petrel Station Facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/thepetrelstation

TRIP DETAILS
Based out of Tutukaka, in northern New Zealand, these trips are a great opportunity to spend a full day on the water and enjoy seeing a variety of pelagic seabirds (including shearwaters, petrels, prions, albatrosses, storm-petrels, skua), often really close to the boat. Naturally there’s no guarantee on what seabirds will be present but that’s part of the excitement.

The trips leave Tutukaka, go via the spectacular Poor Knight Islands and then head out to the ‘Petrel Station’ about 40km offshore. We generally depart just after sunrise and return to Tutukaka late afternoon, which usually gives us about 9 to 10 hours out on the water.

The 30ft boat has fantastic all round viewing for excellent seabird spotting and photography opportunities. The boat is fairly basic with a small separate toilet, seating in the form of a couple of benches and a few big chilly bins (so there can be a bit of standing involved). If it rains there are pull down plastic sides to shelter behind. You’ll need to provide your own food, drink and other supplies for the trip, and dress for the conditions.

COSTS:
The trip costs are shared amongst the people on board (maximum is 9 people, and 5 or 6 people is the minimum to make costs feasible or it may not go ahead). A $240 payment is required upon booking to secure your place and any balance is sorted closer to the trip date when numbers onboard are confirmed. Trip costs (based on how many are onboard) will be:
• 9 people $240 each
• 8 people $265 each
• 7 people $290 each

If the trip is cancelled due to adverse conditions, or not enough people, then all money paid will be refunded. There may also be the chance of Covid related cancellations. Please note if you decide not to come after payment is made, and I can't find a replacement person to fill your spot, then unfortunately I can't refund you the initial payment.

PRIVATE CHARTER TRIPS
I'm also happy to organise private charter pelagic trips to the Petrel Station for individuals or groups - please enquire about any dates you are interested in and I can let you know boat availability and charter costs.

Let me know if you’re keen for a great day out, or if you have any questions about the trips.

NEW TRIP ADDED : 9th DECEMBER 2022 (Friday)
I've just added a new trip out to The Petrel Station for the 9th December so get in touch if you're keen on a great day out with the stunning seabirds, offshore from Tutukaka (in northern NZ).

There'll be plenty of action from the local breeding seabirds and hopefully the Grey Ternlets will have started coming back as well.

There is currently only 2 places left.

Cheers
