AUTUMN 2024 : The Petrel Station pelagic seabird tours, Tutukaka, New Zealand

Postby ourspot » Fri Oct 27, 2023 2:49 pm

The Petrel Station seabird tours AUTUMN 2024 dates have been released (April to May) – check out the tour dates at:
www.thepetrelstation.nz

In autumn as the weather and oceans cool down, it’s migration time for the seabirds heading up from the southern oceans so there’s potential for some scarcer species passing through, and also a good variety of albatross species show up in the area. Most of the local summer breeders gradually depart on their migration, and the local winter breeders return and begin to build in numbers as well. And there’s still usually a few Grey Ternlet (Noddy) around till the end of April. Check out the 'Seabirds' and 'Trip reports' sections of The Petrel Station website to see what species have been recorded during this season.

There's also 2 special tours scheduled in autumn:
– 'eBird Global Big Day' (11 May)
– 'World Albatross Day' (19 June)

If you’re interested in coming out on a pelagic birding tour to The Petrel Station then get in touch – it’s always a great day out birdwatching. And the best way to experience these stunning seabirds is out on the ocean, in their world :)

The tours are based offshore from Tutukaka, in Northland, New Zealand.

Cheers

With all of The Petrel Station summer seabird tours now full, we're looking forward to the upcoming autumn season tours which are just around the corner.

In autumn, as the weather and oceans cool down, it’s migration time for the seabirds heading up from the southern oceans so there’s potential for some interesting, scarcer species passing through, and also a good variety of albatross species show up in the area during these cooler months. The local winter breeders return to the area and begin to build in numbers, while most of the local summer breeders will have departed on their migration. The delightful New Zealand Storm Petrel are still around in and there's still usually some Grey Noddy (Ternlet) around till the end April as well.

The autumn seabird tours are filling up so if you’re interested in coming out for some autumn seabird action then check out the upcoming tour dates at: www.thepetrelstation.nz

There's also a special autumn tour linked in with the 'eBird Global Big Day' which is taking place on 11 May 2024.

It’s always a great day out birdwatching, and the best way to experience these stunning seabirds is out on the ocean, in their world :) .

Cheers

eBird GLOBAL BIG DAY out at The Petrel Station
•• SATURDAY 11 May 2024 --> only 4 spaces left
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Be part of the world’s biggest birding event with The Petrel Station seabird tours, Tutukaka, New Zealand

We've got a special seabird tour scheduled on 11 May 2024 to coincide with Cornell Lab's 'eBird Global Big Day' event ... and out at The Petrel Station we've got a very good chance of adding a bunch of stunning seabirds to the Global Big Day list that won't get seen anywhere else in the world on the day (ie. NZ Storm Petrel)!

Birdwatchers around the world will be getting out on the day to see how many bird species can be recorded globally in a single day (in 2023 over 7,700 bird species were recorded - nearly three-quarters of the world’s bird species!). All sightings on the day are added to eBird, as well as to The Petrel Station's long term at-sea seabird sightings research project that's being run in conjunction with our seabird tours.

So if you're keen for a great day out with some stunning seabirds, and getting to be part of the Global Big Day then get in touch and book a spot to join us. The best way to experience these seabirds is out on the ocean, in their world :)

We've also got plenty of seabird tours running throughout autumn and winter which are great for the Albatross species visiting our area, migration seabirds, and the winter breeding seabirds are around in good numbers too - check out the upcoming tour dates on our website.
