The Petrel Station seabird tours SPRING 2024 dates have been released (September to December) – you can check out the tour dates at: www.thepetrelstation.nz
In the spring months all the local breeding seabird species are back in the area in great numbers so there’s always lots of activity on the water. Buller’s Shearwater and Fairy Prion are around in the thousands and are a spectacular birdwatching experience seeing them in the massive feeding workups. Also it’s prime migration time for seabirds heading back through on the way to their southern ocean breeding areas and we've had plenty of scarcer species put in an appearance at this time of year. The Grey Noddy (Ternlet) usually begin to return in December too. Check out the 'Seabirds' and 'Trip reports' sections of The Petrel Station website to see what species have been recorded during this season.
If you’re interested in coming out on a pelagic birding tour to The Petrel Station then get in touch – it’s always a great day out birdwatching. And the best way to experience these stunning seabirds is out on the ocean, in their world :)
The tours are based offshore from Tutukaka, in Northland, New Zealand.
Cheers
Scott Brooks

Re: SPRING 2024 : The Petrel Station pelagic seabird tours, Tutukaka, New Zealand
ONLY 2 MONTHS UNTIL THE FIRST SPRING SEASON SEABIRD TOURS ... and the tours are already filling fast!
The Petrel Station is at its busiest and grandest during 'Spring' and it’s an outstanding time to come out to experience a wide diversity of New Zealand's stunning seabirds, and the huge seabird feeding workups of Fairy Prion and Buller's Shearwater that The Petrel Station is famous for.
This year we’ve got the most spring tour dates we've ever had with currently 24 seabird tours scheduled between 22 Sep and 19 Dec 2024 - and nearly 70% of all places for spring are already booked out.
For spring all the local breeding seabirds will be returning for the spring/summer breeding season (some in huge numbers), the albatross species are still around, it’s prime migration time for seabirds heading through on the way to their southern ocean breeding grounds, and we've also had plenty of other scarcer species put in an appearance at this time of year too.
So if you are wanting to come out with us for some spring season seabird action then check out the upcoming tours dates on our website and get in touch soon to avoid missing out. The tours are based offshore from Tutukaka, in Northland, New Zealand.

It always a great day out at The Petrel Station at anytime of the year ... but spring really is something else ... let the countdown begin!!

Re: SPRING 2024 : The Petrel Station pelagic seabird tours, Tutukaka, New Zealand
What's better than 1 day out at The Petrel Station with New Zealand's stunning seabirds? WELL ... DOING 3 DAYS IN A ROW!
We've just added a 3 day triple header to our spring tour schedule going from 23 to 25 November 2024. We'll be heading out each morning for 3 days in a row, and with each day tending to be different based on what the conditions are doing it always makes it exciting to see what turns up. November is a great time for potentials such as Chatham Mollymawk, Mottled Petrel, South Polar Skua, Pycroft's Petrel, NZ Stormy to name just a few as well as the huge feeding workouts of thousands of seabirds we encounter.
The 2023 spring triple header last year recorded 37 species and approx 180,000 seabirds over the 3 days!! If you'd like to check out what we saw last year then check out the full trip report at: www.thepetrelstation.nz/trip-reports/01to03-12-2023
There's currently 4 spaces available on each of the 3 days. We already have two other triple headers going out in spring but both are already booked out. If you’re interested in joining us for this 3 day seabird triple header, or would like to come out on one of our other spring or summer seabird tours then check out our website for the upcoming tour dates:

eBird GLOBAL BIG DAY out at The Petrel Station
SATURDAY 12 October 2024 -- ONLY 1 SPACE LEFT!!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
There's currently only 1 space left on our special seabird tour to coincide with Cornell Lab's 'eBird Global October Big Day' event scheduled on 12 October 2024 ... and out at The Petrel Station (offshore Tutukaka, NZ)we've got a very good chance of adding a bunch of stunning seabirds that won't get seen anywhere else in the world on the day (ie. NZ Storm Petrel)!
Birdwatchers around the world will be out to see how many bird species can be recorded globally in a single day (in 2023 over 7,700 bird species were recorded - nearly three-quarters of the world’s bird species!). All sightings on the day are added to eBird, as well as to The Petrel Station's long term at-sea seabird sightings research project that's being run in conjunction with our seabird tours.
We also have 2 spaces on the Sunday, 13 October 2024 tour as well if you'd like to make a whole weekend of it.
So if you're keen for a great day out with some stunning seabirds, and getting to be part of the Global Big Day then head to our website and book a spot to join us. There's also still a small amount of spaces left on our other spring season seabird tours too.
