Lake Ellesmere waterbird census - help needed 21/2

Postby andrewcrossland » Thu Jan 22, 2015 12:04 am

Hi folks,

sorry, just posted this in the wrong forum!

The 3rd multi-agency all-species waterbird census of Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora in Canterbury is going to take place on Sat 21 Feb. As many as 90,000+ waterbirds have been counted on Lake Ellesmere, but Feb counts in the mid 2000s and now for the past 3 years have 35000-55000 range, with an impressive list of species. Its a great chance to become more familiar with the lake and team up with other birders. The lake is divided into a number of sectors, each surveyed by a group of 2-6 people, including at least 1 person with good knowledge of the lake and its birds, so don't worried about being dropped in the deep end, navigation and bird-ID wise.

a write up of the 2013 count is at this link www.wet.org.nz/projects/2013-te-waihora ... ird-count/

and the 2014 count is here:
www.wet.org.nz/projects/2014-te-waihora ... ird-count/

and information about this years count is here:

www.wet.org.nz/whats-hot/2015-bird-surv ... rs-needed/

The census involves a collective survey effort from OSNZ, DoC, CHCH City Council, Environment Canterbury, Ngai Tahu, and any volunteers who'd like to come along and participate.

cheers
