Hopefully a lot of opportunities for volunteers wanting to help rebuild or enhance bird and other wildlife habitat in CHCH will open up in the near future.
Existing opportunities include:
1) Bush & saltmarsh planting/weeding/watering at Charlesworth Wetland with CCC ranger staff and volunteers from the Ihutai Estuary Trust and local community, every Sunday of the year - 3-5 PM in spring/summer/autumn; 2-4 PM in winter.
Charlesworth is a 20ha tidal wetland and coastal bush habitat on the SW corner of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary, a great spot for shorebirds on the right tide.
2) Travis Wetland - regular Saturday planting and weeding (incl around remnants of very rare plants). See the CCC.govt.nz website for details. Run by the CCC rangers and Friends of Travis vols. See the CCC website for details.
3) McCormacks Bay - a new project with CCC rangers, Ihutai Triust and Mt Pleasant community. Restoring the saltmarsh edge, removing weedy species and diversifying the bush strip around the bay's margins. Approx 1 Sunday per month - see the Ihutai Trust website www.estuary.org.nz for details.
casual or regular volunteers welcome at each of these projects.
cheers
