Bird of the Year 2016

Postby Oscar Thomas » Mon Oct 17, 2016 5:38 pm

Hi everyone,

As you know, The annual Bird of the Year competition by Forest & Bird has just begun today, and will continue for two weeks. It's a great way of raising awareness for our Endemic species and last year it received 10,000 total (legit) votes. I will of course be campaigning the Kokako this year which came a close second to Miranda's Bar-tailed Godwit in 2015. Here is the brief:

"Vote for your favourite New Zealand bird!
Our native birds are unique – more than half of our land birds are found nowhere else in the world and a third of the world’s seabirds spend a large part of their lives in New Zealand waters.
But many of them are threatened with extinction. Their habitats are being destroyed and introduced mammalian predators such as stoats, cats, possums and rats prey on eggs, young birds and adults.
Forest & Bird is New Zealand’s leading independent conservation organisation. We’re a not-for-profit working to protect birds in many ways and we need your help. Since our formation in 1923, we have played a vital role in helping to turn around the precarious situation of many of our native plants and animals – through community-driven predator control and advocacy work.
Voting opens on Monday October 17th at 9am and closes at on Sunday October 30th at 5pm."

Kakapo already won, in about 2006 or so. Look at the birdoftheyear website.

Nice one Oscar.

Surely there is no rule that kakapo or other winner cannot win again?

Thank you Neil. No there is no rule, but it's always nice when a new bird wins.
