Forum Registration - step by step guide
Anyone can read the BirdingNZ.net forums. You'll know this already if you are reading this and haven't yet registered. However, in order to start new topics, reply to others, use the search function and a whole lot more, you'll need to register. This is a fairly quick and painless procedure, but it goes a long way to help stop automated bots from filling the boards with rubbish. Some people might still find the registration process a bit intimidating, so I'll walk through the process:

Step 2 - Accept the rules
We have some rules, like every other online community. Nothing too onerous. Read them and click the "I agree to these terms" button:

Step 3 - Account details
An email will now be sent to the address you entered on the last page. Go and look for it, it should only be a minute. If it doesn't arrive, check any spam filters that might prevent delivery:
- 1. Enter a username. This is the name that will be displayed in the forums. It might be your real name (my preference) or anything else you like. You cannot change it later
- 2. Enter your email address. This must be a real email account that you use. You need to confirm the email address in the next box to ensure there are no typos
- 3. Enter a password. The more complex the password, the more secure your account will be. You can use upper and lower case letters, numbers, and some special characters. Best to use something you can remember. Confirm the password in the next box.
- 4. Answer the anti-spam question. The question may differ from that shown below.

Step 5 - Log-in
That's about it. Now when you visit the forum pages, enter your username and password. Click in the tick box if you want to be logged in automatically whenever you return (not a good idea on a shared machine, e.g. an internet cafe). Click on the "Login" button:

If the automatic login doesn't work when you return later, you probably don't have cookies turned on in your browser, or the stored cookie might be corrupt. Try clicking the "Delete all board cookies" link near the bottom left of the forum page and check that your web browser is set to allow cookies.

Re: Forum Registration - A note for Telecom Xtra customers
If the registration confirmation email doesn't arrive (usually within a few minutes) and you are using an Xtra email address please do the following, taken from Telecom's help pages. Doing this will not only fix your problem, but will help train Xtra's spam filters so other members are spared the hassle. At this time, xtra seems to be particularly overzealous with spam filtering:
Please note you will need to follow these instructions using webmail. You cannot fix spam issues using the below instructions if you are exclusively using a POP3 client such as Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook.
First you need to check which webmail view you are using. To tell the difference between the two views, have a look at the Yahoo!Xtra logo in the top left hand corner. If the word 'Beta' appears next to the logo you are using the Enhanced view. If there is no 'Beta' then it is classic view. Please follow the correct instructions listed for each view.
