Sorry about the outage, but BirdingNZ is back!
The wheels fell off and I had to rebuild. Please note that the upgrade means some old features, like daily email digests, no longer work. See viewtopic.php?t=14360

Another great little feature (similar to what you can do in Facebook/Twitter) is to @ someone's name, to tag them into a post.

That's one I hadn't thought of. What would that do: link to their profile, notify them that they have been mentioned, something else?

Notify them that they've had a mention within a thread - for example on our Miranda thread before I could've said:

Thanks @neil (pull through your username) for your feedback.

You'd get pinged a notification that you've had a 'direct mention' or if you wanted to cc someone on looking at a thread that perhaps they might be interested in seeing that conversation. Just creating more of a community within the forum.

I'm open to all suggestions, but will say that I have deliberately restricted the emoticons available to keep the focus on good content, and trying not to look like a street lined with cheap flashing neon signs. ;)

Do you mean links within the site, or to external pages? It is considered bad web form to force users into things like that, especially when they always have the option of right clicking or ctrl+clicking a link to open it in a new tab.
