Potential Hybrid Grey Teal × Shoveler

Postby Jake » Sat Jun 15, 2024 4:09 pm

There was an unusual small duck at the pond across from Millennium Park, Solway, Masterton. It's definitely Grey Teal coloured (other than eyes), but it's behavior seemed off, comparatively unbothered by me getting within ~3-4 metres. It's head and bill shape don't look consistent with Grey Teal. Its feeding style was much more like a Shoveler too. I'm just suring up my belief it's a good candidate as a cross

I’d say that spread wing shot is fairly conclusive. Good find!

Thanks David... these weird ones always make me question myself. After a few days, I'm pretty confident. Looked into it, and apparently it's a known hybrid... though I'm not sure where, and might be an Aotearoa first. Will pop back down and chase before the weekend

Could add Grey Teal × American Wood Duck to the list below too... got a FB friend who has a pair of hybrid males
