Pure Grey ducks found

Postby KiwiSpotter » Fri Jan 10, 2025 4:53 pm

A week ago I found not one pure grey duck but 5 resting on a bank near my house in Weymouth, South Auckland.

Any idea how it ended up there, because pures are pretty rare

Pure phenotypes can turn up anywhere. There are some areas with more of them around than others and oddly--at least to me--the airport/Mangere area is one where one can encounter small groups of birds exhibiting pure features (Even though one might expect them to be in remote swamps like Whirinaki). There are of course many hybrids around as well.

Thanks Russ. I always heard Pure Grey Ducks are only found in the South Island, so that was a great find.

Hi Kiwispotter,

Would you be able to post here any Parera photos hopefully taken of these birds please?

Thanks,

Chris

Hey Chris,
Unfortunately I don't have a camera yet as I don't have enough money to buy one but when I get one they'll probably still be there.
They still are and my friend says they have stayed there since December 2023.
I will post photos too once I get a camera.

Thanks,

KiwiSpotter
