Kakariki in Papatowai village, The Catlins.

Postby dave_holland » Sun May 17, 2020 7:20 pm

I have heard/seen Kakariki (sp?) In Papatowai, right in the village for the whole last week. Maximum number together = 2. This is the first time in 20 years to the best of my knowledge that they have been seen here! The nearest populations are west up the valley fairly good pop, north over the river very small pop, and south over the hill small pop. There has been in going poison drops for at least twenty years and in recent years there is now much more trapping around the area thx to Gavin White who is working for F+B knocking off the rats and stoats.

Nice sighting - good to know the predator control is making a difference.
Was it a big mast year in the Catlins? - I guess if there was a good breeding year for parakeet in the area they may now be venturing further for food?

Cheers
Jim
