Not sure how common the black fronted dotterels are around the country but this was a first for me in Taranaki.
On Sunday 10 May (thinking it was Bird Bird Day...that's another story), Peter Fryer and I spotted a small dotterel like bird to the side of the boat ramp at the Urenui Beach Campground. We were across the river stalking a group of Large and Small Pied shags when a small peep sps. flew across our line of sight and landed beside the boat ramp. It was too far for the 10 or 12c bins so we pulled out the scope and were able to confirm it was an immature black-fronted tern.
When we had observed it for long enough to confirm (and enjoy) this sighting, we packed up and made the 15 min drive to the boat ramp for a closer view. To our delight the little fella was still there foraging at the rivers edge and we spent around 30 mins watching and photographing to our hearts delight.
Pure, dead brilliant!
