Marsh Crake in Tauranga

Postby PaulintheBay » Mon May 25, 2020 7:27 pm

Received a report today -from an experienced observer -of a Marsh Crake near the Coach Road part of the Waikareao Walkway in Tauranga. Good enough description of the species and difference from the rails which are seen there too. Will be Wednesday by the time I check it out. Paul. 0274658710 Tauranga

Re-sighted about 30 minutes ago and I've managed to get a truly fuzzy photo but shows isn't a banded rail. Also 2 banded rails heard here. Rails were McCardles Bush section of the Waikareao Walkway trail . Crake about 100m South on boardwalk. Paul

Thank you very much for the report Paul. I went for a look today but didn't see the crake this time. I did get a fernbird instead though so it was a worthwhile walk.

I went back yesterday and got 2 sightings at the same place. It was right next to the boardwalk and seems tolerant of people - probably because there are so many walking, running and cycling past. It quietly shrank back into the mangroves when a dog went by.

I went over to Tauranga this morning to catch up with Bartek who had drive down from Auckland to look for the Crake. We saw at least two and two Spotless Crake.

They are still there. We get there about 0700 it is quite gloomy until about 0745, you can clearly see them. They seem to go quiet at about nine. Early on there are also Spotless Crake but they are not so confiding. The camera shutter brings out Fern Birds.

The Marsh Crake was seen well by Paul and I around 9:30am - after an initial search along the boardwalk with no results, it was feeding in the marked spot on the way back. Five Fernbird and a Spotless Crake were also heard.
