Seabird related enquiry

Postby sjacques » Wed Jul 29, 2020 1:56 pm

Been looking at bathymetric map of NZ coastal waters recently. Intrigued by this deep trench that runs SW from (roughly) Puyseger point. Anyone aware of any bird records gathered from this area?

Cheers,
Sean

Hi Sean,
If you search for the recent trip report to the Snares Is. you will see what was about early March, not too far from that spot, more easterly, halfway towards Stewart Is.
Hope to plan a trip to target that very same area hopefully next year (August) if all goes to plan.
Looking at the weather app "Windy" you can see the wind prediction for that area is more often than not extreme and regularly reach 30 -45 mph Northerlies or Nor westerlies. Getting there might be a challenge.

Thanks Steve. I am based in Bluff so will make some enquiries down this way. Would be interested to know how your plans develop also. The feature in question is the Puyseger trench and is of course part of the subduction zone where the Aus and Pacific plates meet. It is apparently 800 km long and a mere 6,500m deep!

Cheers,
Sean
