Weka west of Whakatane

Am certain i saw a weka (but could have been a pheasant, couldn't check whether it was) west of whakatane just past the Tauranga turn off going towards awakeri on the east part of the road (when driving it). Hope that makes sense

Yes, 12 years in Pohara, Golden Bay being entertained by the Pohara falcons (who just in the last week or so seemed to have moved off to wherever they go for the winter), and we ourselves are now on the move, heeding the call of the grandchildren. Not exactly sure where yet we'll fetch up in the BOP, but probably Ohope.

Heard calling on Sisam's station (south of Whakatane) and had one walk across a forestry road while I was having lunch in Omataroa forest a month or so back. An extensive network of pred traps through there (over 10000 ha I think I was told) must help.

Yesterday, we nearly drove into a weka 1km down Galatea Rd. This is just outside Te Teko. The driver also confirms it was a weka. Notable distinguishing features include v-shaped body, small head, upright tail.

I have got some very good news regarding the population of wekas in the BOP region. I have had an talk with someone who says they have seen one between Matata and Whakatane (so far I can remember) and a even better record with photos from some people north of Edgecumbe on their place! Apparently they also know of one at the refuse tip in Edgecumbe. Here are the photos.

Sorry for the late report, but a weka was seen by myself and some other people 2 kilometers down Grieve Road near the racecourse. 100% Weka!! They are traveling very quickly.
