Mystery Call - Tiritiri Matangi Bird

Postby simon.fordham » Mon Apr 05, 2021 7:48 pm

A friend has just sent this night recording from Tiritiri Matangi Island. Not one of Tiri's normal calls. Any ideas?

That was my initial impression too, Duncan, but it did not sound quite right. I am unaware of any pied stilt records on Tiri but I do believe they are at Shakespear Regional Park.

Or maybe Canada Geese flying overhead?

Pied Stilt; not Canada Goose, too high-pitched for one thing.

Definitely Pied Stilt as other have mentioned (at least 2). These guys regularly transit around at night so even though they're not regular on Tiri I bet they fly over Tiri every week going here and there.

Thanks Russ, Peter and Duncan.

That confirms what I suspected. I have since been advised that 'there are plenty at Shakespear' so it is perhaps surprising that we have not heard, or even seen, them before. It is, however, unlikely any visiting stilts will stay as there is very little, if any, suitable habitat on Tiri.
