Re: Black Petrel, Bennydale and Taumaranui
I got a call about this a few hours ago and was just going to post. Two have now been collected, one from Bennydale and another from Taumaranui, and now in care. Apparently in good condition (720 and 790 g) and to be released this evening near Raglan.
A black petrel was found similar time last year in the general area. Seems to be something about this area that young blacks like. Could be worth looking at western Waikato beaches over the next few days too.

Perhaps the inheritance of migratory direction sends them there and if Titi and Taiko refer to petrels, the place names Titiraupenga and Motutaiko might reflect this.

When gps trackers become as cheap as chips these inland grounded birds would be great to track. Have they been blown inland or is there still a breeding Colony in the nearby hills?

The one recovered last year was banded. Would need to go to Biz for details but I understand it was banded as a chick on Aotea / GBI, 'not long' before it was grounded, suggesting these might be young, inexperienced birds.

Re: Black Petrel, Bennydale
Some years ago there were a number of similar reports from a sawmill somewhere there or thereabouts with lights on at night. There was hope of a colony in the area but it was not found. The thoughts were that young birds headed out from the breeding islands south down the Hauraki Plains without really noticing them and eventually were caught out by the hill country and lights and landed.
I don't know whether it was a good idea or not but it does look like a bit of a hot spot for crash landings of Black Petrels.

There was another report on Facebook yesterday, this time of a White-chinned Petrel in Hawke's Bay recovered after being blown inland by stormy weather. It was taken to a coastal headland and successfully released there, flying off over the sea.

Another Black Petrel reported on Facebook, this time found in Ruakaka in Northland. Reportedly safely returned to the sea and released today.
