I photographed this pair of hoary-headed grebes (?) 3 years ago, not knowing what they were. I've since learned about the Hoary Headed, and a fellow birder tells me these chaps are vagrants to NZ, so a resident pair just might be significant. I apologise for the delayed posting. Could someone please confirm that these are hoary headeds?

They were on the north side of the Waikanae River Estuary, close to the Waimanu Lagoon outlet structure. Waikanae Beach has some great wetlands, so its just possible this pair are still in the wider neighbourhood.

These are subadult New Zealand Grebes/Dabchicks, I'm afraid.

Still an excellent sighting of a recovering endemic species.
