I too would suggest checking Lake Horowhenua. There are a couple of long-ish staying whiskered tern records from there, albeit not for a while now. All the best with search.

Alan,
I can only recall that the head was quite "white-fronted", ie. with white over the forehead at least.

A few keen birders out looking today at Pharazyn reserve. We also checked Lake Horowhenua, but no sign of any Terns at either site.

It was a nice day out anyway ...and I recruited the local gulls with my lunch as a scale for Graham's tern (+ saw 4 wrybills and 3 NZ dotterels downstream from here)

I visited Waimea Lagoon, Pharazyn and the Peka Peka ponds yesterday early afternoon, with no luck too. Another obvious place is of course Nga Manu - just over the ridge from the Pharazyn reserve. Must drop down and see some Wrybills at Waikanae.
Cheers, Graham
