I saw eels and there was pair of Black-backs that were busy eating one while I was there, but I also saw definite silvery fins of some pretty large fish that obviously weren't eels. They did look kahawai sized and they were having a field day chasing smaller bait fish (which I also saw jumping).

I've caught sea run brown trout at the bridge where the lagoon joins the river and they have all been on the lagoon side of the walkway. It is a regular spot for catching sea run browns just as the tide turns with some quite big fish (4 kg) caught.

HI, I am wondering it the Northern Pintail has been sighted again recently? I was thinking of heading down that way this weekend.

Has the bird gone or did we just lose interest?

Hi Ian, not sighted this morning after a group of us walked the length of the lagoon with scopes. No sightings recently by local birders either, cheers

Have just found a female Northern pintail with mallards at the same location. Same bird as last Spring? - no real way of knowing. Out in the middle behind the line of posts when viewed from the hide. Will upload some record shots shortly.

Bird never close, but decent scope views in good light. Heavily cropped images;
1. Up-ending with mallards showing distinctive tail shape, lighter build and greenish legs.
2. On her own in profile - unmarked head and blue-grey bill just about discernible.
Cheers,
Sean

Re: Mega northern pintail tip Lagoon Invers
Thanks David,
On reflection I think this has to be the same individual as last year. She appears to be paired with a drake mallard x grey duck; I saw her displaying yesterday, stretching head and tail out which I think is a 'receptive' signal to the male. I don't think this kind of behaviour would be expected from a newly arrived N hemisphere vagrant.
Something to keep a close eye on!
Cheers,
Sean
