By chance, Joy & I met Dave Howes at the southern ponds of Ki-Wainono this morning as we were about to do the summer wader count. The water level in the ponds and the lagoon itself was high, so not much exposed mud. However, the count included 522 pied stilts, 5 bar-tailed godwits, 1 turnstone, 1 sharp-tailed sandpiper, 1 glossy ibis and over 300 black-billed gulls.
Following this the three of us moved to the northern end of the lagoon, but again the water level was high - suitable mainly for the 18 royal spoonbills busily feeding there.
Full totals will be on eBird shortly.
