White-winged Black Tern - Hawkes Bay

Postby sav » Sun Dec 05, 2021 2:08 pm

Hi all,
A first year White-winged (Black) Tern was found yesterday morning at the “new” wetlands by Waitangi in HB.
It was still present today up to about 10am.
It’s a great first rarity for the site, which already has a breeding colony of Royal Spoonbills.
Cheers

Hi all,

Wayne and Margaret Twydle (the original finders) saw the bird again today, but this time about 1km away at the beach where there is a small White-fronted Tern colony. Presumably the bird is roosting with the other terns and then fishing all around the estuary and wetlands?

cheers

Hi all,

The same bird was again present on the beach at Waitangi at about 1230 today, with 28 White-fronted Terns.

After an apparent absence of nearly a month, this bird was back at Waitangi, on the beach, again this afternoon.

And again this afternoon. Flew from the beach across the road, presumably to the "new" wetlands. It seems that nobody has seen it since 10th February?

It seemed to me that the plumage had not changed at all in the intervening time.

Hi all,

The White-winged (Black) Tern was reported again today (by Wayne and Margaret Twydle) from the Waitangi beach, with a few White-fronts. Still no Black-fronted Terns seen.

cheers

Margaret and Wayne Twydle report a White-winged Black Tern in non-breeding plumage and a Little Tern at Waitangi wetland (Horseshoe lake) near the Ngaruroro River just north of Clive in the Hawke's Bay:

Great bit of cross-posting from Michael (for which we should all be grateful) but just to be accurate, in case anyone wants to look, both birds were on the beach at Waitangi, rather than Horseshoe Lake.

Thanks for the clarification Sav, I was just going by where the pin was in the map in the checklist.
Hopefully these terns stick around for a bit longer.

Hi all,

The HB White-winged Black Tern was present this afternoon at Haumoana, which isn't all that far from Waitangi, but nonetheless a surprise.

And then the Little Tern arrived as well......madness!
