White Heron in Picton

Postby Byrd » Wed May 11, 2022 12:42 pm

I couldn't see this reported elsewhere on the forum, but there is a White Heron currently resident along the Picton waterfront if anyone is passing through there and wants to see one very easily and closely. It frequents the cafes along London Quay and is completely unbothered by people - it literally walks inside the cafes to look for food amongst the tables.

There was one resident at the wharf in Mapua 3 or 4 years ago which did exactly the same thing, hung around the cafe and walked in around people and scavenged food. I wonder if it's the same individual.

Just throwing out the possibility that this heron *could* have toxoplasmosis

What do others think?

It's very unusually fearless for herons in NZ
