Oscar myself and Fraser all commented on the above photos and tend to agree…

Hi guys I went to Travis a while ago and saw this Teal, I am no Chestnut Teal expert and would just like to see what you guys thought. Is it a Chestnut Teal or not? Any help will be much appreciated.
Ps sorry for the poor quality it was just a record shot

From what the photo shows the head seems much darker than an average grey teal. Whereabouts did you see it Micah?

It also has the dark tail feathers so yes it is the male Chestnut teal

Interesting to see this photo of 2 drake Chestnut Teal in breeding plumage taken today in South Australia and posted to Facebook by Mark Parnell.
Has anyone seen the Travis drake recently and if so, is it moving into breeding plumage yet?

I last saw the Chestnut teal on the 1st of July - no difference in plumage at all since my first sighting. It is continually being sighted, with a record from yesterday.

Shovelers and mallards are courting and starting to mate around CHCH waterways so its gonna be interesting to see what happens with this bird and the female its been associating with........
