It could be a large little penguin moulting?

White faced Little Penguin filmed in Oriental Bay

Postby Michael Szabo » Sat Sep 24, 2022 3:56 pm

I just saw this video clip of a very white faced Little Penguin filmed in Oriental Bay, Wellington, on 28 April 2022.
Could this be the bird that was filmed in Evans Bay in July which was identified as a possible Sphenicus penguin at the time?

This one was filmed by Sean Gillespie and the clip posted to the 'Whale and Dolphin Watch - Wellington' Facebook group.

I may have seen that same penguin swimming in Whairepo Lagoon.
Very brief glimpse, but the amount of white definitely stuck out

Thanks for the report Finn, did you get any photos please?
If anyone sees it again in the vicinity it would be good to get a decent photo of the bird.
