Paul Griffiths has posted today to Facebook this photo of what he describes as "South Island Pied Oystercatcher (Australian tagged). Neale Park, Nelson, June 2022".

I seem to remember seeing somewhere that someone in Australia had banded/flagged a South Island Pied Oystercatcher which was a well known vagrant at the time (or maybe it was already banded when it was found there?). Is it confirmed this bird was flagged in Aus?

Either way, I don't think this bird is an Australian pied oystercatcher, the beak looks too long and the legs too short.

Okay, that may explain it. I've emailed him to ask if he can elaborate on his post.

There has been a SIPO banded in AUS with an orange flag inscribed '1N' so not this bird unless others also have been: https://birdlife.org.au/documents/barc/SUMM970.htm

Looking at the flyway protocol I thought a single yellow flag would mean this bird was banded in NW Australia (https://eaaflyway.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Protocol_birds-marking.pdf) but just received an email from Tony Habraken confirming that yellow flags are given to birds flagged in Nelson as part of the recent SIPO project - so this individual does not have anything to do with Australia.

Thanks for the clarification Oscar - that clears up a little mystery.
