Ha! Just editing a farm video from last Friday shot up around Waipara in Canterbury and there is a Shining Cuckoo in the background. Weird I didn't pick up on it at the time!

Shining Cuckoo call first heard for Spring 2022 in Flagstaff Reserve, Russell, Bay of Islands at 1340 21 September 2022.
Mid September seems to be usual timing for this area over last 10 years. Late last year not heard until early October.

Our first for the season (East Tamaki Heights, Auckland) was also yesterday, 24 September.

In 12 years of records, this is the latest (by four days). Our earliest record was the 8th.

Shining cuckoo in our garden, Waikanae, yesterday. Quite late.

Other notes: Bittern flying over old highway just south of Waikanae on Thursday.

Another mysterious large raptor (not harrier) seen from kitchen window looking down the valley towards Reikorangi on Wednesday.
