Shining cuckoos - 2022-23

Postby Ian McLean » Mon Aug 22, 2022 2:37 pm

Kia ora
Yesterday, we had a Birds New Zealand field trip to Whatipu at the Manukau Heads & to our surprise we heard the call of a shining cuckoo. It's song was clearly heard by four of our participants whilst walking the Whatipu Caves Track. Other species seen or heard included New Zealand pipit, fernbird & dunnock (a relative rarity for the Auckland region). Unfortunately no bittern or crakes were seen.
Cheers
Ian

Hi Ian
I heard of a record from Kerikeri last week, not sure of the exact date. Those prolonged northerlies may have brought them in earlier this year.
All the best,
Tim

Hi Neil,
Maybe you could merge the earlier thread. There’s been one here for two weeks. Calling again this evening.
Cheers

Thanks Tim. I must be going blind. I did look before posting, honest! Now merged and I have changed the thread title.
