THE PETREL STATION TRIP REPORT (17 November 2022)
Had an outstanding day out at The Petrel Station on the latest pelagic seabird trip offshore from Tutukaka (in Northland, New Zealand). Conditions on the day were overcast, with steady 10 to 15 knot winds throughout the day, and a 2m swell.

The highlights of the trip were:
- A Wedge-tailed Shearwater
- A Grey Petrel
- 2 Black-winged Petrels
- 4 Mottled Petrels
– A Long-tailed Skua

During the trip we saw 28 different seabird species, and enjoyed watching around 9,500 stunning seabirds in total! One surprising part of the trip was only seeing 45 Buller's Shearwaters during the day – normally in spring/summer we see thousands of them as they breed on the nearby Poor Knights Islands.

You can see some images from the day, and past trip reports, at: www.thepetrelstation.nz/trip-reports

Sorry didn't finish my sentence!!
How do you do estimates when the birds are in the 10,000s and I assume not staying nice and still!!

Cheers
