Hi Saul,
If you have a smartphone you can take a 'proof of life' record shot simply by holding the camera up to the lens of a scope, or even binoculars.
Attached is one I took of a pectoral sandpiper down here in Southland the other day. Zoom in and you can clearly see the bird in the middle of the shot, to the right of the grey teal.
Won't win any wildlife photography awards, but even at that scale and resolution it shows some of the diagnostic features (particularly in this case the sharp contrast between densely streaked breast and clean belly).
A useful tool to have up your sleeve (or in your pocket),
