Weka in South Taranaki

There is a report on Stuff today of a Weka being found in South Taranaki!

Interesting that the news report says, "Although it’s unknown how the birds got to Manaia, it’s possible the weka were released illegally."

As the bird looks like a western weka, I would rate an illegal release as more than likely.

A mate of mine who had alot of weka around his house at lake moana had a weka hitch a ,ride unknowingly to him , to his mother's place in greymouth. Just saying.possible.
