It's not news that there are Royal Spoonbills at Unahi at this time of year, but for newcomers to this site and/or birding, it might be useful to know that this is a great spot to view them.
Yesterday there were about 120 Spoonbills feeding across from Unahi Wharf on the mud near the mangroves, on a falling tide. At other times, they also roost in the big old macrocarpa trees to the right of the wharf.
If you are visiting the Far North, Unahi is an easy spot to visit and often yields spoonbills, terns, herons and gulls.
To get there, take the road from Awanui towards Cape Reinga, but about 1km after the end of the 50km speed restriction, turn right down Unahi Road and follow it to the coast where there is a wharf and slipway.

Are they Royal spoonbills? I thought Royal spoonbills had a crest on their head.

Only in the breeding season (and even then only when they're feeling perky). So not really expected in winter (when theyre most numerous at Unahi)
